L.I.G.H.T. (Living In Gods Hands Today)
God speaks to all of us in different ways. Some of us are led to Bible
passages for answers, some actually hear Gods voice and for
others, its through ideas or inspiration.
God gave Harlan Rector the idea for L.I.G.H.T. in answer to his prayer
for a way to help spread his word, the good news of Jesus Christ.
Harlan Rector wasnt very good
at knocking on doors or spreading the word on a street corner, but
one Sunday morning he awoke to his clock radio tuned to a local radio
station. He was listening to a program called Heartbeat Theatre, a
weekly fictional radio drama. Rector, a top voice-over actor on TV
commercials and the voice of the History Channel, realized that was
it, that was the way to spread Gods word through a radio program
of true stories of how Gods miracles work for people everyday.
A few days later, Harlan called the radio station to find out
how often they aired Heartbeat Theatre, so he could listen to it again
for some ideas on how it could be produced. To his amazement, their
radio logs showed they hadnt aired an episode of Heartbeat Theatre
in over seven years. Shocked and dumbfounded, he tried to make sense
of what he had heard that Sunday morning.
Since its inception, God has been directing L.I.G.H.T. at every
turn beginning with the initial idea. Rector decided to produce the
series with a little financial help from a few friends but mostly
out of his own pocket, but he needed a name for the show. He had been
thinking and praying about it and as he was driving home one day,
God had given him the word LIGHT. It was as if the word was emblazoned
on his windshield. He knew in his heart that it was the right name
for the show and almost instantly he knew what L.I.G.H.T. stood for,
Living In Gods Hands Today. Harlan was so excited he almost
drove off the road onto a golf course as he rounded a corner. In
those five words, God had given us a rule and direction for our lives.
Another touch of God came when he started to think about a theme song,
(every show needs a catchy theme song), and he really wanted music
to be an integral part of the show. Although Harlan was very connected
in the broadcasting field, he really didnt know how to get a
song written or produced. One day on the train ride into the city,
God worked through him and he started writing the words to L.I.G.H.T.
even though he had never written a song or done much writing at all.
Miraculously, the words just came pouring out with complete verses
and a chorus. The lyrics for the theme song were completed in the
one hour train ride..
Now that he had the words, what was he going to do for the actual
music? Harlan talked to a friend about it. The friend said the only
musician he knew was his sons guitar teacher who was into heavy
metal rock and whos name was Ratso. Harlan didnt have
anything to lose, so he called Ratso and went over to see him. In
talking to him, he found out that Ratso had just decided to give up
heavy metal music to form a Christian band. They talked about the
idea (the Lords idea) for L.I.G.H.T. and about the lyrics that
needed some music. Ratso looked at the words and started humming a
tune that he had written that had no lyrics. They went into his studio
and the music and the lyrics fit together so perfectly, that not one
word or one note had to be changed. Thats the song that has
been the cornerstone for the series, opening and closing every episode with a
musical message of Gods word.
